Panama, a country that was never on our radar, turned out to be a delightful surprise during our recent Fancy Nancy Travels South American Adventure trip to Colombia. Thanks to Copa Airlines’ enticing offer of a free layover, we decided to add a three-day stopover in Panama to our itinerary. Little did we know that this Central American gem would captivate us with its rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant nightlife, and mouthwatering Afro Panamanian cuisine. Join us as we recount our serendipitous adventure in this enchanting destination!
Day 1:
After a red-eye flight from Los Angeles, we landed in Panama City on a Thursday morning. The convenience of a prearranged hotel shuttle made our journey hassle-free. Our hotel graciously allowed us an early check-in, providing a much-needed opportunity to refresh before embarking on our first adventure. We started the day with a delightful breakfast and then met our photographer in the charming neighborhood of Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Viejo or San Felipe, a town built in 1673, following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city, in 1671, when the latter was attacked by pirates. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997.
The photography session doubled as a walking tour, allowing us to admire the city’s beautiful architecture and stroll along the boardwalk, which boasted a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline. Panama City’s impressive urban landscape easily rivaled that of Miami.
As avid explorers of local nightlife, we couldn’t resist booking a bar crawl for the evening. Our hosts took us to four different establishments, each with its unique vibe. The lively and fun atmosphere, coupled with the popularity of Afrobeats music, made us feel right at home. It was a night filled with laughter, dancing, and unforgettable memories.
Day 2: Unveiling the Wonders of Panama City
On our second day, we embarked on a full city tour that included a visit to the world-famous Panama Canal. This engineering marvel surpassed all expectations, as we witnessed a colossal 12-story ship navigate through the canal’s impressive locks.
The sheer magnitude of the operation left us awestruck, emphasizing the canal’s vital role in global trade. The tour also exposed us to other notable landmarks, giving us a comprehensive glimpse into Panama City’s history and culture.
No trip is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Panama did not disappoint. In our quest for authentic culinary experiences, we stumbled upon an Afro Panamanian dining experience led by a surprising figure – a Kenyan chef who had made Panama his home. The fusion of African and Latin inspired flavors showcased his culinary expertise, leaving us in awe of the mouthwatering dishes presented before us. It was an unexpected connection, uniting us as Kenyans in a foreign land through our shared passion for travel and the love of good food.
